Johnston took his men and regrouped them into a new army, The Army of the Mississippi. The Army of the Mississippi was split into four Brigades, under command of Generals Leonidas Polk, Braxton Bragg, William J. Hardee, and John C. Breckinridge. Johnston took his newly formed army and marched east to try to take Grant by suprise. However, he was stalled for two days on account of forests, rain, ect.. On the eve of the battle, Grant and Johnston's armies were about the same size, however Johnston's forces were poorly trained, exausted from their long travel, and had little supplies. They would need the element of suprise if they were going to win this battle.
